Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is one of the underlying conditions in Asperger Syndrome, ADHD, Tourette's Syndrome, and many learning disabilities.
Sensory processing issues are usually first noticed when a child is very young. With adequate intervention and training, most children can get rid of their sensory difficulties. As a result, most professional attention has been paid to children with SPD.
But many kids aren’t even diagnosed until they are in the middle school years. These young people have been struggling for years because of bewildering experiences, mistaken diagnoses, and painful failures. They need help too—and it has to come in a form that respects their independence.
This website is dedicated to providing parents of older kids with information on how to help young people with sensory issues.
